Advice on best laptop buy autodesk revit.

Hey all!


I am a student who is going to use a lot of autocad revit. During my research for buying the best laptop I stumbled upon alex' article:

It was very informative! As far as I can tell not many people did as extensive testing as you did.


I know the basics of computer components and how every things works. I would like some advice on the specs. My budget is €1000-1500. My preference goes to more around the €1000.


My University recommends the following specsheet for the laptop:


- minimum of 8 GB RAM.
- harddisk 0f 256 GB or more.
graphic card with a minimum of 512mb.
- GPU: minimum of Intel i5, preferably i7 or similar.


This seems to be a little on the lower end.
After doing some research I think I set my eye on either the lenovo legion 5, HP omen 15 or the XMG core 15.


I have read that it takes about 8gb RAM to proces a file size of 200mb, is this correct?
I informed my peers and the biggest size they mentioned was 7 mb big.
So that would mean 8 gb RAM is sufficient, do you concur? I asked more people for reference but they have not replied yet.


Onto the graphic card; I have the option for the gtx 1650, 1660 or 2070. I would like to game on the laptop, but that is not the priority. Eventuality I am going to buy the ps5. If I can save some money on this that would be great. Which one would you recommend? From my research all are viable. But could not find specific benchmarks when using revit.


The GPU; based on you're article the intel chips seem the best. But newer versions for both the Intel and AMD GPUs are available, does the performance translate to the newer versions?
I have watched a few YouTubers on the subject and it seems that AMD is the better overal choice.


So, should I take AMD or intel? I can't decide, both are great, intel more for single heavy tasks but AMD is better at multi tasking and works more effecient with the battery. And is slightly cheaper.


Would ryzen 5 or I5 be sufficient?


The other tasks wil be browsing, writing essays watching movies etc.


My own preference goes to the HP because of the better thermal regulation. But the legion has better offers. The Core 15 is the easiest to spec to my own preference but is the most expensive. Is exensive thermal regulation even necessary?


I already have an aoc 24g2u monitor so a 144hz or other high refresh rate panel is not a must.

So after reading this which laptop would you recommend?

Hey Boris,
File Size is not directly correlated to scene complexity, so you not easily use that metric to find out what you need. You might be using external Textures or some Object modifiers that need little space to save but increase the complexity of your scene by a lot.

I'd recommend a minimum of 16GB for Revit, for more complex scenes, 32GB would be optimal. A 1660Ti would be the lower end, a 2070 would be ideal, but those can come at a price in laptops.

AMD's most recently released Mobile CPUs are excellent and have very high multicore performance at quite low power draw, so if you can find a Laptop within your budget that comes with a 4600H/4800H/4900H, go for that. If not, you might want to look into an older Intel gen CPU such as the 9750H which is still very good for revit.
