Is using remote desktop an option for CG work?

Hi,

I've been working on my laptop for a couple of years now and since I recently started creating some more complex scenes and animations I ended up ordering a desktop pc with more power to keep going with my learning and projects.

I haven't received my new pc yet but I'm wondering if it's possible to use remote desktop or a similar application to control my new PC from the laptop so I can take advantage of its power when I feel like working elsewhere other than where my desktop PC will be.

Has anyone had some experience with this? Is this even possible or does the laptop need to be as powerful as the desktop to handle the scenes?

When using a Remote Desktop software you will need a laptop with internet and that’s it. The Remote Desktop sw will be ‘streaming’ the video to your laptop, but the workload will be handled by your PC desktop at home. The issue is you will probably have some latency, specially if the internet speeds isn’t great. It’s worth a try !

Thanks, I will definitely give it a try, most surely I will be using it at home just when I want to move to my laptop and work from there and see if I can make some use of the touch screen it has when I do some sculpting so I hope the local connection will be good enough to avoid latency

Yeah it's a question of latency. You can use TeamViewer for example if you are outside of your home network. Microsoft Remote Desktop really only works easily when you are within the same LAN.

I have a friend who would use Google Remote to remote into his home PC using Windows from both a MacBook air and I think even an iPad to do work on his PC. He showed me while we were at a bar on their wifi and it ran great, surprisingly.

It's worth a shot to see if you can do the work you want, at the very least.

that sounds great, I will definitely try that because I also have an iPad that could come very handy for 3D sculpting and such, thanks for the info :)
